The culm of this giant bamboo smells like incense if rubbed. A nice, upright bamboo with small leaves, very suitable for hedges and spinneys. Young shoots are remarkably greyish black. Very good for construction. We avoid tissue-cultured plants as seen in the trade, and propagate only through division. May grow even taller than indicated under optimal conditions!

A great bamboo if you've got the right clone; sometimes inferior, micropropagated plants are imported. These have many trhin culms, tatty leaves and are only moderately hardy. Never buy this plant in a garden centre!

Very hardy, magnificent bamboo. Has yellow culms with green stripes. Culms occasionally zig-zag. Sometimes a single branch may bloom, but the plant continues to grow unperturbed.
Don't buy micropropagated plants, they remain juvenile forever.

This bamboo is similar to P. pubescens and has been imported under other names, but the soft, hairy culms and the chracteristical shoots leave no doubt to it's true identity. It is here by far the most vigorous bamboo, producing extraordinary numbers of culms. Suitable for plantations. !!! started flowering july 2010 no longer for sale now !!!

Quickly this bamboo forms wide culms but the shoots are sensitive to late frost and break easily in storms. The culms have vertical stripes. Slugs and red ants love it! May walk very fast through the garden.

This bamboo, which occasionally spontaneously develops from a P. vivax 'Aureocaulis', is green with a yellow sulcus. It grows faster though, and is a very beautiful bamboo if you want a high, wide species. In our garden almost 7cm thick (measured between 2 knots at around 160 cm from the base)!
